| Farming has historically been one of the economic backbones of the communities of the French River area. Many of the first settlers came to establish farms. In recent years, there has been a shift from dairy to beef operations, with a concurrent shift from smaller to larger dairy operations. Agriculture in French River has also become a secondary activity for many people, with small beef operations providing supplementary income for many people who hold jobs elsewhere.
Vacant and under-utilized agricultural land is abundant in the area. The land is fertile, and there is some land that has been equipped with tile drainage. A wide variety of soil types and exposures may be found in the region, hence a wide range of crops could be produced. Agricultural opportunities DO exist in French River!
Currently, in addition to beef and dairy production, the region has some agricultural activity in strawberries, vegetables, deer, and buffalo.
